592 Street Kings tournament set for September 7, 14 & 21

Local ‘street ballers’ now have another platform at which to display their talents, thanks to the launch of the 592 Beer ‘Street Kings’ tournament.

This three-night tournament will have a straight knockout format, with victorious teams continuously advancing to the grand finale. However, the organisers have decided to conduct a plate final in order to give eliminated teams another shot at the prizes.

The tournament will be hosted on September 7, 14 and 21, and each date will have its own venue. On September 7, the action would be at the Berlin Tarmac; on September 14th the action will be at the Burnham Court; and on September 21, the action will be at a venue that is yet to be decided.

Organizer Michelangelo Jacobus has listed the 16 teams vying for the grand prize, but has also disclosed that the number of participating teams is likely to increase.

“Of course we will be revisiting the number of teams that will be participating, due to the overwhelming response that we’ve had recently. I think over 30 teams would have raised their arms to be a part of this competition, so that’s something we will be looking at over the next couple of weeks,” Jacobus explained.

The 16 participating teams thus far are: Sparta Boss, Gold is Money, Tiger Bay ‘A’, Tiger Bay ‘B’, Albouystown, Alexander Village, Back Circle, Broad Street, LA Ballers, Future Stars, John Street, ESPN, Melanie, Diamond Upsetters, Stabroek Ballers and Leopold Street.

The tournament is primarily sponsored by ANSA McAL under their 592 Beer brand, and the grand prize is $300,000. Second place will pocket $150,000, while third and fourth places will respectively receive $100,000 and $75,000. The plate winner would be awarded $50,000

On behalf of ANSA McAL, marketing representative Seaquan Mc Garrell spoke of the company’s continued involvement in sport, and of his hopes for the tournament.

“I must say that I’m very excited to be on board with launching this tournament. For me, football has always been a means of bringing people together. ANSA McAL, through its 592 Beer brand, is committed to giving back to the community and helping to develop athletes at the grassroots level. This initiative is to encourage young people and their communities; help them to be active, develop their skills, and to also be competitive,” Mc Garrell said.

The organiser has said it is his and the sponsor’s hopes that the tournament can in future branch out to other areas in Guyana, such as the West and East coasts of Guyana, Berbice and Bartica.
