5th Smalta Girls’ Football tournament commences today
The fifth annual edition of the Smalta Girls’ PeeWee Football tournament is set for four weeks of anticipated rivalry after it kicks off today at the Ministry of Education Ground (MoE) on Carifesta Avenue, Georgetown.
The event is set to conclude on December 8th, before which 11 primary schools will be hunting to dethrone defending champions South Ruimveldt.
In the 2017 edition of this tournament, South Ruimveldt dethroned the 2016 champions, St Angela’s, 2-0. Third place went to West Ruimveldt, who defeated Saint Pius 2-1 in a penalty shootout.
The three-group, 12-team tournament has St Stephens, Genesis Harmony, South Ruimveldt and Mae’s in ‘Group A’, while ‘Group B’ consists of North Georgetown, St Margaret’s, Smith’s Memorial and St Pius.
‘Group C’ is comprised of FE Pollard, West Ruimveldt, Enterprise and Tucville.
A total of six matches will be contested today, being held simultaneously by twos.
The winning team will receive $200,000 while the runner-up will claim $100,000; third place occupier will get $75,000 and fourth placer $50,000. All prizes go towards a school project of the winners’ choice.
