6-mth-old baby dies in accident after driver falls asleep

A fatal accident that occurred along the Unity Public Road in Mahaica, East Coast Demerara at approximately 01:30h on Monday, January 2, 2023 has tragically claimed the life of six-month-old Devine Khan of Lot 61 West Road, Sparendaam, East Coast Demerara.
Enquiries have disclosed that, at approximately 01:30h on Monday, January 2, 2023, 27-year-old Dequan Khan and the late six-month-old Devine Khan were travelling in motorcar PNN 8403, being driven by Ackeem Jerrick, a resident of Sparendaam Housing Scheme, ECD, in a westerly direction along the southern drive lane of the public road at Unity, Mahaica.
Motorcar PVV 2649, being driven by 31-year-old Davin Butts of Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, was proceeding east along the northern drive lane of that road at the same time.
Butts has reportedly told investigators that he fell asleep at the wheel and lost control of his vehicle. As a result, motorcar PVV 2649 collided with the front portion of motor car PNN 8403.
The drivers and occupants of both vehicles were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where the child Devine Khan was pronounced dead on arrival. Davin Butts has received injuries to his head; Ackeem Jerrick has received injuries to his right leg, and Dequan Khan has received injuries about his body. They are all presently being treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The matter was reported to the Police at about 01:43h, and within two minutes, Police officers arrived on the scene. Both vehicles have been lodged, to be examined as investigations continue. (G12)
