6 Venezuelan children rescued after canoe sinks in Cuyuni River
Six children attending the Eteringbang Primary School were rescued on Tuesday after the canoe in which they were travelling sank in the Cuyuni River, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), at about 16:45h, as they were returning home to San Martin in Venezuela after attending school.
Police have said the children were returning to the Venezuelan border when their canoe took in water and sank in the vicinity of Eteringbang Landing. However, public-spirited persons went to their assistance, and were able to rescue all of them.
The children: two six-year-old females, two eight-year-old females, one nine-year-old female and one 11-year-old male, were taken to the Eteringbang Health Centre, where they were examined by Dr Raj Sooragpaul in the presence of their parents.
Police have said these children were all in good health, “but were evidently traumatised.”
