High Court Judge Gino Persaud on Thursday imposed a seven-year prison term on 23-year-old Clinton Allen, who had earlier pleaded guilty to a manslaughter charge over the stabbing death of a man in 2019. Allen was initially indicted for murder by State Prosecutor Lisa Cave.
He, however, pleaded guilty to the lesser offence, admitting that between May 30, 2019 and May 31, 2019, at Kamarang Landing, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), he unlawfully killed Godrell Joseph.
When Allen made his first court appearance in 2019, the Prosecutor told the court that two years prior, Allen and Joseph were involved in a fight that left Allen with a scar on his face.
On May 30, 2019, Allen spotted Joseph at a bar imbibing. He waited until the man left the bar and attacked him with a beer bottle. Allen then made good his escape. Joseph’s body was discovered on the roadway the following day with injuries to the neck and head.
Allen was later arrested and confessed to killing the man as payback. Following a sentencing hearing at the High Court in Essequibo, Justice Persaud sentenced Allen to seven years, two months, and six days in prison.
