… after son set her bed alight on Christmas morning
A 73-year-old woman has succumbed to her burn injuries following days of hospitalisation after her son allegedly set her mattress on fire while she was resting on Christmas morning.
Dead is Mengree Dahri, called “Gladys”, of Gale Street, Annandale, East Coast Demerara.
Investigations revealed that the elderly woman lived with her 43-year-old son and sometime around 10:00h on Christmas Day, a nearby resident observed smoke emanating from the bottom flat of the two-storey house.
Upon further examination of the house, it was discovered that the victim was on a bed which was engulfed in flames. With the assistance of public spirited persons, the woman was evacuated and the fire extinguished.
Dahri was hospitalised at the Georgetown Public Hospital nursing severe burns about her body. However, she succumbed on Thursday at about 06:30h, according to a Police report.
Meanwhile, her son has since been arrested and remains in Police custody. The suspect, who is said to be an alcoholic, has admitted to setting the fire, which eventually killed his elderly mother.
A post-mortem is expected to be performed on the body of the 73-year-old woman today.
