Home News 75-year-old new COVID-19 death
…5 in ICU, 3 new cases
A 75-year-old man from Region Four has been recorded as Guyana’s 1225th death from the novel coronavirus.
According to the Health Ministry on Monday, the person was partially vaccinated. He died on March 13.
Statistics from the latest dashboard showed that from 276 tests processed, only three persons tested positive. This included one in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), one in Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) and one in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).
Confirmed cases have reached 64,147 since the virus was first detected – comprising 29,078 males and 34,069 females.
From 150 active cases, five patients are in the Intensive Care Unit, 13 in institutional isolation and 132 in home isolation. There are six persons in institutional quarantine. Meanwhile, Guyana’s recovery is at 61,722, and 552,595 tests have been analysed to date.
All Guyanese are reminded to observe the protocols of the COVID-19 emergency measures which emphasise the need for correct and consistent use of a face mask when leaving your home; the importance of maintaining the six feet physical distance from others; and the need for good hand hygiene.
Government, through the National COVID-19 Task Force, is currently working on lifting the emergency measures that were put in place to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.
Director of the Task Force’s Secretariat, Colonel Nazrul Hussain recently explained that President Dr Irfaan Ali passed the directive on Sunday to have this done at the soonest time possible.
Over the past two years, these restrictions have been amended – strengthened as well as partially removed – in order to fit the situation of the pandemic in Guyana.
Colonel Hussain pointed out that the current state of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country does not warrant the continued implementation of strict guidelines.
After a spike of 20,000 cases for the month of January, the country’s daily detection of active cases has dropped significantly within recent weeks. On Sunday, only 10 cases were detected.
