8 arrested for engaging in cockfighting in Berbice

Eight men from Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) were on Sunday arrested for engaging in cockfighting and were placed on bail to make their court appearance before the end of the week.
Based on reports gathered, the men were arrested for both hosting and attending a social activity in breach of the COVID-19 emergency measures gazetted.
The Public Health Ministry issued wide-sweeping restrictions and a national curfew to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus.
However, on Sunday ranks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) visited the home of Dextroy Melville, where a cockfighting activity was being held.
It was during that time, Melville, 31, of Bora Street Rose Hall Town, was arrested for hosting a social activity while Lloyd Murray, 36, of David Street, Rose Hall Town; Wilfred Mann, 32, of Rose Hall Town; Brandon Patiraj, 19, of Boundyard Port Maurant; Jamal Brush, 27, of Mati Street Rose Hall; David Singh, 51, of Whim, Corentyne; Saaheed Seetaram, 20, of Rose Hall Town and Kevin Deheart, 22, of Port Mourant were all arrested for attending a social activity.
The men were all placed on bail and are expected to make an appearance before the Albion Magistrate’s Court today.
Cockfighting is an illegal game that the police have been trying to stop, but it continues in several villages across the length and breadth of Guyana.
