8 homeless after fire destroys Parika Façade home

An early morning fire that is suspected to be an act of arson has left a family of eight homeless.

The fire that gutted the home at Parika Façade

Reports are that firefighters responded to the fire at the home of 39-year-old Joshua Campbell and his family at Parika Façade, East Bank Essequibo (EBE), at about 09:30h on Friday. By that time the two-storey wooden and concrete building was fully engulfed.
As a result of the fire, the building and its contents were destroyed, leaving Campbell and seven others homeless.
Also affected by the blaze was a one flat wooden and concrete building which is situated on the northern side of the fire, owned and occupied by 31-year-old Derrick Bhagwat, and his family of four.
Due to radiated heat, windows on the neighbouring house were destroyed.
“The purported cause of the fire is that it was maliciously set by person(s) unknown,” the Fire Service said in a report.
One water tender and crew from the Leonora Fire Station responded to the scene and one jet working from the original tank supply aided by a light pump working from an open water source was used to extinguish the fire.
Further investigations are being carried out by the Fire Prevention Department to confirm the cause of the fire.
Only two days ago, a fire of unknown origin erupted at Romulus Street, Agricola, East Bank Demerara (EBD), and completely destroyed two buildings in the Greater Georgetown community.
That fire also left four persons homeless, and the origin is yet to be determined. (G9)
