– active cases now 420
Guyana has recorded eight new coronavirus cases, bringing the total number of confirmed positives in the country to 631.
This was revealed on Thursday via the Health Ministry’s daily COVID-19 dashboard, which showed that these cases were four females and four males.
From the 631 confirmed cases, 420 are active in institutional isolation while five persons are in the designated Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
The number of persons in institutional quarantine is 45 while deaths remain at 22. A total of 11 persons have also recovered in one day, which raised the figures to 202. To date, a total of 5638 persons have been tested for coronavirus in Guyana.
A gender breakdown of all reported cases shows that 316 were males and the other 315 were females.
The current situation has seen an upward trend for Regions Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo), Eight (Potaro-Siparuni), Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) and One (Barima-Waini). Earlier on Monday in fact, there were 135 detected cases in Region Seven.
According to the Regional Administration, 49 cases were recorded in Aranka, 23 in Devil’s Hole, 19 in Batavia, 15 in Bartica, nine in New Found Out, five from Melangree, four from Agatash, two in Big Hope and one in Riversview.
Notwithstanding, the border communities are at risk from contraction when persons enter the country illegally. This has been compounded with the fact that medical services are not as accessible as the coastland.
Venezuela has reported some 26,800 cases with 229 deaths while Brazil has a whopping 3,057,470 cases with 101,752 deaths. In Suriname, there are 2489 cases with 30 deaths.
However, Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr Karen Boyle advised on Thursday advised that 40 per cent of Guyana’s positive COVID-19 cases are asymptomatic – that is persons were not showing any physical signs of the disease, including not having an abnormal temperature.
As such, she urged the populace to be careful and observe the guidelines. Persons are also urged to keep wearing face masks and more so to practice social distancing.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the region of the Americas has recorded over 10.7 million cases, with more than 393,000 deaths.
Globally, the number of COVID-19 cases has surpassed 20.1 million, while the deaths are currently pegged at over 737,000.
