9-hour power outage for city today

Several communities in Greater Georgetown will today experience a nine-hour power outage, the Guyana Power and Light (GPL Inc) announced earlier this week.
According to the power company, this interruption to the electricity supply is necessary to facilitate the Sheriff Street/Mandela Avenue Road Expansion Project.
The areas that will be affected are Laing Avenue to Adelaide Street and Middle Road; Broad and Russell Streets Charlestown; Aubrey Barker Road and South Ruimveldt Gardens; Roxanne Burnham Gardens and Guyhoc Gardens; Shirley Field Ridley Square and East Ruimveldt; North East, East and West La Penitence; Worthmanville, Louisa Row and Newburg; as well as Independence Boulevard, Nora, Callender, James and Hunter Streets Albouystown.
The power outage will be between 08:00h and 17:00h today. GPL on Friday said it regrets any inconveniences this may cause.
Works on the US$31.03 million Sheriff Street-Mandela Avenue Road Enhancement Project commenced earlier year.
The contract for the project was awarded to Sinohydro Corporation Ltd back in November last year and the contract was signed the following month. The project, which will cover approximately seven kilometres of road, is being funded by the Inter-American Bank (IDB).
Works for the two-year project include the relocation of utilities, lane and shoulder improvements, placement of sidewalks and paved shoulders, traffic signals, traffic signs, streetlights, drainage, a pedestrian overhead walkway, culverts, bridges and a Roundabout.
The Public Infrastructure Ministry had cautioned back in March that during the period of construction, residents living close to the road, road users, and the wider community may be inconvenienced by traffic delays, dust, as well as general construction activities.
“The Ministry wishes to emphasise that these impacts will be temporary and will be constantly monitored to ensure their minimisation. The Ministry advises that persons take all necessary precautions,” it added.
