9-year-old struck down by speeding car

Police are investigating a serious accident which occurred on Monday, during which a nine-year-old boy was struck down along the Canal Number One Access Road, West Bank Demerara (WBD).
Based on information received, the accident occurred about 16:00h. The motor car, driven by a 38-year-old man of La Jalousie, WBD, was proceeding east along the northern side of the road, allegedly at a fast pace, while the pedestrian was standing on the northern corner of the road.
The driver alleged that while in the process of passing the pedestrian, the child stepped forward and hit the left front fender and wing mirror. As such, the child fell to the road surface and parapet some distance away and received injuries about his body.
Police said that the driver then stopped the vehicle, picked up the child, who was conscious, and took him to the West Demerara Regional Hospital. He was seen by a doctor, and referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was admitted. His condition is regarded as stable.
Two breathalyser tests were conducted on the driver, but they registered no signs of alcohol. He was taken into custody and was currently assisting with the investigation. (G12)
