Persaud, Fernandes among top performers

Madison Fernandes continued her form while Zachary Persaud gained some steam as the Lucozade Squash tourney continued at the Georgetown Club Courts.
Persaud (7) and Louis Da Silva (6) battled to the end in the main event of the night, with Zachary winning the first game in commanding style by thumping his

opponent 15 – 6. Da Silva bounced back to win the second game 15 -11 before Persaud surged to a five-point lead in the third game before winning his first point, then winning another seven points before Persaud won his second point.
At 13- 2 it seemed that it would only be a matter of time before Da Silva was victorious, but Persaud had other ideas. He clawed his way back to get to 10 -13 before his opponent won a point to set up match ball at 14 -10. However Da Silva could not close out the match, and point by point it was Persaud who inched closer and closer to eventually get to 14 all. At this stage it was sudden death, with the winner of the next point securing victory, and Persaud would ensure a fairytale come back by winning this point and thus the match 15- 14.

In the other highlighted match, the young Fernandes (0) faced Lucas Persaud (11), and all three of the games finished in identical fashion, with scores being 15- 12. Persaud won the first game 15- 12, but Madison would win both the second and third games 15 -12 to win the contest.
In the lone Open category match played, Robert Natiello (8) defeated Reagan Rodrigues (11) 15 – 8, 11- 15, 15- 9.

Seniors shine
Senior squash players got into their groove on Thursday evening with matches in the A and Open categories.
The Open category saw Nyron Joseph (-22) being the player with the lowest handicap. Having to call on all his experience, he defeated Robert Natiello (8) two sets to one. The difference of 30 points to overcome proved to be too much for Joseph in the first game, as Robert won this game 15- 4. Natiello would only win one point in game two, as his opponent won the second game 15 – 9 and Joseph would eventually close out the contest with a 15 -10 win in the third.
Regan Pollard (-12) proved to be too strong for Ashley Khalil (-4) as he won the match in straight games 15 -11, 15 – 7. The closest match of the evening saw Jonathan Antczak (6) coming from one game down to defeat Javid Rahaman (-2) 13-15, 15-10, 15-10, while Adam Alves (4) also had to overcome a first game deficit when he defeated Dane Pereira (10) 12 -15, 15- 9, 15- 8.

In category A, Gianni Carpenter (-4) easily disposed of an in-form Zachary Persaud (7) 15-10, 15 -13, while the experienced Abosaide Cadogan (-4) surrendered just two points in her match against Teija Edwards (11) with a 15- 12, 15- 12 victory. Nicholas Verwey (-1) continued to show tremendous all-round improvement as he defeated Madison Fernandes (0) 15- 6, 15- 10.
Matches continue on Saturday from 18:00h, with the finals set to be played on Sunday starting at 11.00 am.
