Christianburg pummel Charlestown, Marian shock Rose’s

Guyoil /Tradewind Tankers Under-18 tournament

The Marian Academy football team on Monday afternoon gave their schoolmates a lot to cheer about as they trampled St Rose’s in the eighth round of the Guyoil/Tradewind Tankers Under-18 tournament.

Marian, who had not been able to stand up to the heightened competition, on Monday proved that they have what it took to challenge the best. The Marian boys were on the hunt from the whistle, and controlled much of the possession, which led to Mickel Placcres netting their first goal in the 21st minute.
The prospects of being in control of the game did well for the private institution as Danil Brazoa volleyed another goal in the 33rd minute, pushing the score to 2-0 by the half. When the teams returned to the playing field, Shay Britton decided it was his time to come to the party. The young man found the back of the net twice, in the 53rd and 59th minutes, to carry Marian’s lead to 4. On the other hand, St Rose’s were not having a good day on the pitch as they were unable to hit the target, resulting in a 4-0 loss.

The second game of that afternoon was equally thrilling as Dolphin battled with The Bishops’ High School. The goalless back and forth did not go on too long as Shamar Welch handed Dolphin Secondary the lead in the 19th minute. However, Dolphin’s lead did not last long after Romeo Bradford equalised for Bishops’ in the 31st minute. The half ended with the score at 1-1, and the battle was now to see who could finish on a high note. Both goalkeepers were on their toes, rejecting attempt after attempt but it was one too many for Dolphin’s keeper in the 60th minute, when Malachi Richards slipped the ball in for a goal. The encounter ended 2-1 in Bishops’ favour.
Guyoil/Tradewind Tankers tournament action continued on Tuesday afternoon with two more exhilarating games.
Christianburg Wismar Secondary continued in their winning ways when they met Charlestown on Tuesday afternoon. Felix Inniss got the scoring going for Christianburg Wismar in the 22nd minute. The remainder of the half passed quietly, but Christianburg returned with full vengeance for Charlestown in the second. Andre Meyer netted one just two minutes after the half resumed and then he was joined on the scorecard by George Stephen. Then like lightning, Jermaine Mason capitalised just two minutes after Stephen. When it seemed like the encounter would end 4-0, Kevin Dornick joined the scoring party just a minute before regulation time expired to end on 5-0.
The final match of the evening featured Uitvlugt and Vergenoegen Secondary Schools in a battle of who is the best West Coast Demerara team. Vergenoegen wasted no time in initiating their scoring, as Troy Skeete netted their first in the 14th minute. Ronaldo Macey, three minutes later, pushed the score to 2-0 and then the young man returned in the 25th minute for his second goal and Vergenoegen’s third. Beginning the second half with the score on 3-0, Vergenoegen sought to stamp their dominance as the young men executed crisp passes and controlled ball possession. Macey completed his hat-trick in the 42nd minute, but Vergenoegen’s parade of goals was briefly interrupted by Ruben Dainty of Uitvlugt, who netted the team’s lone goal. Brentnol Bobb, however, ended the game on a high note for Vergenoegen with a goal in the 55th minute, securing their 5-1 win.
