Region 10 resident latest COVID-19 fatality, death toll now 204

– 33 new cases recorded in 24h

A 76-year-old man from Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) is Guyana’s latest COVID-19 fatality after he died en-route to a medical facility on Monday.
His death, which was confirmed by the Health Ministry on Tuesday, has now taken the death toll to 204.
On Monday, two women, a 69-year-old from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) and a 64-year-old from Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) were victims of the virus. They died while receiving medical care at a hospital.
However, the Health Ministry in its daily update, revealed that 33 new COVID-19 cases were recorded from a total of 814 tests that were done. To date, Guyana has recorded 8847 cases – 4556 males and 4291 females.

Statistics provided showed that seven patients remain in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 36 persons are in institutional isolation, 400 in home isolation and 11 in institutional quarantine. This has moved the active cases up to 443.
Guyana has tested 71,427 individuals and 8200 positive patients have since recovered completely.
Of the 33 new cases, one was detected in Region One (Barima-Waini); two in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam); seven in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara); 19 in Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica); two in Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice) and two in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).
The cases in Regions Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), Eight (Potaro-Siparuni), Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) and 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) remain at 778, 245, 425 and 660 respectively.
Meanwhile, highlighting how people develop a worse form of the virus, Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony explained that “a lot of times that happens because the body’s immune system has an exaggerated response, something that is often referred to as cytokine storm. Therefore, at that point in time, you need to use a different set of medication.”
He added, “There are different manifestations. Different patients would present with a different set of symptoms and depending on what we’re seeing in that particular patient, we’ll have to alter the treatment to suit the particular patient. So, no one patient would have the same set of symptoms. They all very. Depending on what we’re seeing with that patient, that is how we adjust our treatment.”
All Guyanese are reminded to observe the protocols of the COVID-19 Emergency Measures (No 15), which are in effect until March 31, 2021. This order emphasises the need for correct and consistent use of a face mask when leaving home; the importance of maintaining the six feet physical distance from others; and the need for good hand hygiene to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.
