Guyana’s 55th Independence Anniversary

As Guyana celebrated its 55th Independence Anniversary on Wednesday, residents of Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) were urged to cultivate act of patriotism for a better Guyana.
During his address at the Regional Democratic Council’s (RDC’s) Independence Anniversary celebrations in Region 2, Regional Executive Officer (REO) Daveanand Ramdatt said the RDC aims to work towards improving and enhancing the lives of citizens. He said development in society is defined not only as the energy invested to fix the infrastructure, but also to fix “ourselves” by way of thinking.
“The Regional Democratic Council (RDC) is proud to be taking the lead in the development of our region. I am happy to say that we enjoy the confidence of stakeholders and a strong will and commitment from (the) people that we serve… We need to reunite and come together as we move about our professional lives and whatever people do. What certainly can take us out of this is the will of our people to persevere and to find innovative approaches to survive,” Ramdatt said.
On Wednesday, the Region Two Administration hosted colourful Independence Anniversary celebrations themed “Expressing our will to reunite and rejoice in diversity” in the compound of the RDC.

The programme included a parade, the hoisting of the National Flag, singing of patriotic songs, and dances, among other cultural presentations.
Meanwhile, Regional Vice Chairman Humace Oodit, in his address to the gathering, said that every aspect of development brings its challenges.
“It is important that we continue to practise the unity of diversity as we celebrate Independence in Guyana. So, our achievements reflected 55 years on Independence in Guyana is what we should reckon upon. Political development has opened new avenues that forge a new democratic in our country… Our Government and our region are confident that, as a nation, we can be able to identify a truly inclusive political culture. All stakeholders are allowed to meaningfully participate in our development plan,” Oodit said.
Further, he noted that the development participation has unified the nation at a time when challenges arise. He reflected that between the years 1940 and 1966, there were many challenges that the nation faced to commonly achieve Independence. On May 26, 1966, an independent Guyana was born when the Golden Arrowhead was hoisted for the first time, breaking the shackles of colonialism, hence bringing forth freedom by instilling hope and expectations in the people of Guyana.
Among those present at the event were Commander of ‘G’ Division, Crystal Robinson; Captain Hope of the GDF; President of the ECCI, Aadil Baksh; and members of the Joint Services.
