The Orlando Diaspora in collaboration with the International Center for Democracy recently hosted an event at Legends Resto & Lounge in observance of Guyana’s 56th Independence Anniversary.
Legal Affairs Minister and Attorney General Anil Nandlall was the keynote speaker while Zulfiqar Ally, Deputy Ambassador at the Guyana Embassy in Washington DC; Fazal Yussuff, Advisor on Investment and Diaspora Affairs, Guyana Consulate, New York, and Ramzan Ali, Honorary Consul General in Miami were in attendance.

Nandlall, in his feature address, went back in time to remind the Diaspora of the 28 years of rigged elections that Guyana endured under the dictatorial regime of the People’s National Congress (PNC) shortly after Guyana became an independent nation.
It was during that time during the PNC ruled that Guyanese fled from their homeland to seek a better life for their families. It was not until 1992 when the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), under the leadership of the late President Dr Cheddi Jagan, won free and fair elections that democracy was restored in Guyana.
