Ramson hands over basketball hoops to Ithaca community
Basketball in the community of Ithaca, West Bank Berbice, will benefit from the installation of high-quality Mega Slam-branded basketball hoops that were presented through efforts from the Volunteer Apprenticeship Community Support programme, spearheaded by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport.
Minister Ramson is flanked by community members and others after presenting and mounting the basketball hoops
The presentation was made on June 26th by Sports Minister Charles Ramson Jr., who was accompanied to the community by Director of Youth, Suresh Singh, the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Kashif Muhammad, Commissioners of the NSC Dellon Davidson and Cristy Campbell, and National Security Advisor Captain Gerry Gouveia.
The basketball court has already benefited from some rehabilitative work, such as casting of the playing surface, reconstruction, and painting of both bleachers, painting of the washroom facilities, as well as landscaping and clearing of the nearby drains. As such, the hoopsare only the icing on the cake.
Ithaca, as the latest beneficiary of the programme, which is yet to reach its pinnacle, is evidence and testament of the current administration’s emphasis on community empowerment, which is a fundamental tenet and important facet of social cohesion.
The pledged and eventual delivery of the basketball systems is once again indicative of Minister Ramson Jr’s commitment not only to the development of Guyana’s sporting landscape, but the advancement of the nation’s human capital, which is its most important natural resource.
