‘Experienced’ Permaul backs GAW spinners for CPL 2022

A staple in the Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW) team from 2013 to 2019, Veerasammy Permaul has returned to boost a massive spin line-up for the team. And it is safe to say that the Berbician is quite happy being back at home.

“It’s always a privilege and honour to represent Guyana at any level, and I’m very happy to be back home, after the last two years,” Permaul told Guyana Times Sport recently.

The 32-year-old left arm spinner has made his way back to his home franchise, after spending two years with the Jamaica Tallawahs in the Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL), and he is eager to link up with Guyana’s formidable spin department.
During a GAW training session last week, after expressing his elation at being back, Permaul highlighted that he now brings experience to the table.
“I’ve been a part of the Test team for a little while. Having said that, I think I gained a lot of experience playing regional cricket for Guyana, and even playing CPL. I learned a lot, I gained a lot of experience, and I think I’m a very much experienced cricketer now,” the bowler shared.
Discussing his area of interest, spin bowling, Permaul spoke highly of his Warriors colleagues, but was careful to note that the Warriors would not be relying on that single aspect for success.
He had this to say about his colleagues, “I think our spin department is well equipped. We got two experienced international spinners. We have young Motie, who played for West Indies recently, bowling well. I think the spin department is well covered at the moment.
“Well, hopefully, over the years, Guyana always wins a lot of games at home. At the same time, we’re equipped with spin and we expect spin at the Providence stadium,” Permaul went on to add about the expected ‘spin-factor’ at the Providence Stadium.
However, Permaul had this to say about the Warriors’ preparedness, “I think it’s important, even though other teams will come with spin, it’s important as a team, whatever the conditions, whatever is required, we put it together and get the best result.”
The Berbician is eager to bask in the vibe of a Guyanese crowd a Providence, noting that their support is important to the local franchise. “Over the years, the Warriors have let down the Guyanese fans, and this year we get the final home, so, come out and support. In cricket, we say twelfth man, and the twelfth man is the crowd, and that’s a motivation, once you know you got the support,” a smiling Permaul related.
“So, come out and support,” he added.
Permaul and other members of the Warriors team are in sporadic training locally. Their camp is set to begin on August 9, ahead of the August 31st CPL start date.
