As the Government of Guyana is making effort to beautify the seafront area at Kingston, Georgetown, and to make it more tourist-friendly, people are now using the opportunity to vandalise the area.
This has also occurred at a time when the Government is currently working to make the area a safe place for all.
New lights were installed along the Kingston Seawall area on Thursday last, and within a matter of hours, they were stolen. It is still unclear if anyone was arrested for the act. The installation of the lights was a part of the Government’s Beautification Project. In 2020, the Government injected $5 million to beautify the popular leisure spot, and, Public Works Minister Juan Edghill explained that it was for the benefit of all the people of Guyana, and to ensure that Guyana is a tourist destination where the people at the current hotels and the new hotels will be able to relax.
The lighting exercise was the first step in the Beautification Project, and was expected to be completed by December 2020, but was only completed on Thursday. However, Minister Edghill said that the project is important and of historical value to Guyana.
