Businessman gets $300,000 bail on illegal gun, ammo charges
Luis Moreno, the 34-year-old businessman who was arrested last Sunday with an unlicensed firearm, was on Wednesday placed on $300,000 bail after appearing before Principal Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court to answer
two charges.

A resident of School Street in Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara, Moreno has been charged with illegal possession of a firearm and a quantity of ammunition, but he has denied the charges.
Reports are that at about 00:30h on October 29, acting on information received, Police ranks went to School Street, Goed Fortuin, WBD and contacted Moreno, who was standing in his yard. One of the ranks told Moreno that he was suspected of having an unlicensed firearm on his premises, and requested that the Police be allowed to carry out a search on his person and premises.
The businessman permitted the Police to carry out the search, and nothing of evidential value was found on his person. The ranks then proceeded to the upper flat of Moreno’s two-storey building, and searches were conducted on the back verandah in his presence. Inside a barrel with clothing, the ranks found one .38 revolver (with the serial number filed off) and six live matching rounds of ammunition. A further search revealed a small black rectangular box containing 65 rounds of live 9mm ammunition and one black 9mm magazine.

When Moreno was cautioned, he reportedly replied that the ammunition was his, but not the gun. He was then arrested and escorted, along with the gun and ammunition, to the La Grange Police Station. (G1)
