Last week, Police Constable Simon Alder received a sentence of three years and six months in prison for an accident at Whim, Corentyne, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) in 2020 that claimed the lives of three of his friends.
Alder, 24, of Corriverton was charged in December 2020 with three counts of dangerous driving causing death and reckless driving. He was on trial for the offences before Magistrate Renita Singh at the Whim Magistrate’s Court.
On August 2, 2020, while travelling along the Whim Public Road, Corentyne, Quacy Lewis, 21, Jessica Gallaway, 21, and Reon Moriah, 25, were all fatally injured when the motor car they were in—driven by Alder—crashed into a lorry that was parked along the roadway.
After determining that Alder was guilty as charged, Magistrate Singh sentenced him to prison.
After being found guilty, he received jail sentences of three years and six months for each of the three charges of causing death and six months for each of the two counts of dangerous driving.
Due to the concurrent nature of the sentences, he will only serve three years and six months.
Alder had been out on $300,000 bail on the causing death charges.
It was reported that Alder was allegedly intoxicated when he crashed the motor car he was driving into a motor lorry that was parked along the Whim Public Road.
According to reports, motor car PGG 9262 crashed into motor lorry GJJ 5939.
Eyewitnesses said that while they were assisting the driver of that motor car, the vehicle Alder was driving, motor car PWW 582, came crashing into the rear of the motor lorry.
