Police crackdown on illegal fireworks trade in Orealla

In a decisive move to ensure public safety and the protection animals, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) conducted a search operation in the Orealla Station district, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), targeting the illegal sale of fireworks.
Approximately 11 shops were scrutinised, leading to the confiscation of a significant quantity of prohibited fireworks.
Over the past years, the GPF has intensified its efforts to curb the sale of firecrackers and other explosives during the holiday season. This proactive stance is aimed at safeguarding animals and ensuring the well-being of the public.
The initiative follows concerns raised by the Guyana Veterinary Board, which emphasised the adverse impact of pyrotechnics on animals. A panel discussion involving key stakeholders, including the Guyana Wildlife Conservation and Management Commission (GWCMC), the Bar Association of Guyana, the Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA), and the Guyana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA), highlighted the need for stricter regulations.

The explosives that were seized

The Guyana Police Force has committed to robustly enforcing all laws related to the use of squibs and firecrackers, not only during the holiday period but also beyond. The aim is to create a safer environment for both animals and people.
The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) remains the sole authorised agency for the importation of firecrackers and other explosives. The sale and purchase of such items are strictly prohibited under the Customs Act, as amended by Act No 1 of 2005.
In light of the potential dangers posed by these explosives, the Guyana Police Force urged the public to desist from using such devices. The emphasis was placed on the risk of injuries to humans and the overall safety of the community.
The crackdown on illegal fireworks sales underscores the commitment of the Guyana Police Force to maintaining public safety and upholding the law, especially during festive seasons. Authorities are sending a clear message that the illegal trade of fireworks will not be tolerated, with measures in place to ensure a safer and more responsible celebration for all.
