Novar, Leonora record big wins

Digicel Schools Football Championships…

Novar Secondary and Leonora Secondary schools recorded the highest margins of victory when the Digicel Schools Football Championships continued on Saturday.
At the Number 5 ground on the West Coast of Berbice, Jaison Wronge and Aubrey Joseph recorded doubles in Novar’s 5-0 thumping of Fort Wellington Secondary. Wronge scored in the 33rd and 75th minutes, while Joseph etched his name on the scoresheet in the 69th and 82nd minutes; Omar Williams’s goal in the 20th minute had given his team the lead.

In the other match, Bush Lot Secondary edged Mahaicony Secondary 3-2, thanks to a brace by Shaqueel DeHarte and assistance from Ntini August. August was the first to score — in the 6th minute — after which DeHarte cushioned the lead with goals in the 13th and 18th minutes.
The opposition had a resurgence with goals by Jerome McKenzie (53rd) and Nebert Sears (63rd), but it was not enough to change the inevitable.
Over at the National Track and Field Facility at Leonora, WCD, the home side hammered Goed Fortuin 6-1, while Uitvlugt won 2-0 against Stewartville. Vreed-en-Hoop and Patentia played to 1-1 draw, with the latter winning 3-2 on penalty kicks. Windsor Forest also dismantled Zeeburg 5-1.
Matches will continue today at the Number Five ground, where Rosignol tackles Bush Lot from 15:00 hrs. Over at the Beterverwagting Ground, East Coast of Demerara, Annandale Secondary will clash with La Bonne Intention from 14:00 hrs, after which Ann’s Grove will face Buxton Secondary from 16:00 hrs.
The winning school will collect $1,000,000, to go towards a project of their choice, along with the championship trophy.
Second, third and fourth place finishers will receive $700,000, $400,000 and $350,000 respectively; and these sums of money are for a project of the school’s choice.
$100,000 will also be awarded to the respective regional champions. The final is slated for July 30 at Leonora.
