A 38-year-old electrician is now a patient at the Woodlands Hospital, nursing a gunshot wound to his head as he was shot during a robbery, shortly after leaving the Republic Bank, Triumph, East Coast Demerara (ECD) location early Wednesday afternoon.
Reports are that around 13:30h, Terry Chand, of Hope West, Enmore, ECD, was just entering his Foulis worksite after visiting the financial institution when an identifiable male armed with a handgun apprehended him, while another kept lookout. The man then ordered Chand to hand over his bag containing $600,000 cash; when he refused, he was shot to the head.

The bullet grazed the back of his head and he was now at the private hospital in stable condition.
Preliminary Police investigations have, so far, revealed that the men used a CG motorcycle to commit the crime. Police said the motorcycle bore no licence plate and they have recovered a single spent shell at the scene.
The injured man’s boss, Rudranauth Roopdeo, related that he has been employed with R Kissoon’s Contracting Service for the past five years as an electrician and received his salary on Tuesday.
“He works as an electrician and he was paid via a cheque and he went to transact his business. He went to Republic Bank at Triumph to cash a cheque and when he went back to his worksite at Area L Public Road, Foulis, the two men on the motorcycle robbed him,” he explained.
Roopdeo said that the men could be easily identified since they were not wearing masks and several persons witnessed the shooting.
According to one of the man’s co-workers, Latchodat, he was just finished speaking to Chand when the bandit shot him.
“About 11:30am, Chand say he got a meeting and he left and he come back after 1:00. So when he come back we just come off lunch so me went ripping t-shore with the chainsaw and I say ‘you come back’ and same time me say that a man just come run in and just point the gun up to he and just shoot he and take off the bag,” he related.
“So now, me get me chainsaw and I go fuh turn, but the (gun) man say ‘you don’t turn’ and the man point the gun to me, so me had to switch off the chainsaw so the man just jump on the CG and ride off,” Latchodat added.
He further stated that the gunman was tall and light-skinned, approximately six feet tall with short hair. Additionally, he explained that the bike was black and silver and after Chand was shot, a neighbour rushed to render assistance and they transported him to the hospital.
Speaking from his hospital bed, the injured electrician related that he went to the Bank to cash a cheque for $800,000 depositing $200,000 of the amount and was taking the remainder home, as he was currently renovating.
He noted that he observed a woman leaving the line after he completed his transaction. He then hopped onto his motorcycle and was riding back to his worksite when he observed a Nissan Bluebird motor car driving alongside him.
“Whilst riding as I passed Mon Repos coming down past the market that was by Good Hope a Bluebird PVV was driving at the same rate I was riding and it never try to pass me, because there was way he could pass me. While I slow up and thing, the vehicle keep slowing up, bouncing Lusignan by the market I observed this bike coming at a fast rate so I start accelerate, now as I accelerate, I lost them a good distance, but the car was still behind me,” he related.
Chand said he became suspicious and accelerated and upon arriving at his work place, he observed the car driving slowly past him and was almost immediately ambushed by the man.
“So like by Melanie I see back the car and the bike and I ride as fast as I could and when I watch back at my worksite, the car was still there. The car pass slowly past the worksite. So I just put off my helmet and try to take off my bag and rest it on the bench, then I hear a loud noise and I know is a gunshot. I feel me head and it get numb plus I start feeling dizzy, so I know I get shoot in me head. The guy come and try pull off the bag and say loose the f*@%king bag. It was two of them; the pillion rider had the gun,” Chand added.
He further related that he did not remember anything after being shot, but indicated that the doctors said there was no major damage.
The investigations are ongoing with no arrests made so far.
