Having received a sound thrashing at the hands of her partner – not the first time – which led to her being hospitalised, the victim is not only refusing to co-operate but has allegedly lied to law enforcement officers (“Woman severely beaten by husband refuses to press charges” Guyana Times September 24).
A crime was committed but the victim is refusing to co-operate with law enforcement.
This has to be seen as tantamount to an offence in itself and a travesty.
Too often victims take matters into their own hands by refusing to have their partners and perpetrators of the offence face the consequences of their grievous actions, hoping that by giving a reprieve and another chance, change will come.
But change does not come and then it is too late.
