Dear Editor,
I am a resident along the East Coast of Demerara and my plight is that we seem to have forgotten what it means to live in a community.
One recent night, I was home with my children. It was already late, and after a long day, I was trying to get them settled so that I could get some rest myself. My younger child had finally fallen asleep when loud music started playing nearby. The music was so loud that I could hear every lyric, including those of an explicit nature, inside my house.
I tried closing the windows. I tried getting my child back to sleep. But every time the music became louder, my child woke up. By the time things finally became quiet, it was well into the night.
The next morning, I still had to get up, prepare my children, get them ready for school and go about my own responsibilities. That is the part people sometimes do not think about.
A few days later, I expressed my frustration with my neighbour, but he became upset. I have filed a complaint with my NDC and they have promised to have the atter addressed with my neighbor.
I am not against people enjoying themselves. We all need to celebrate, relax and have a good time. But enjoyment should also come with consideration.
We cannot live in a community and behave as though we are the only people living there. My community is made up of families, children, elderly people and hardworking residents who all deserve to come home and have some peace.
I am simply asking that we think about our neighbours before turning the volume up, especially late at night. Because sometimes, what is only a few hours of fun for one person can become a sleepless night for an entire family.
Sincerely,
Name withheld
