Aliyah Abrahams became just the fourth athlete to qualify to represent Guyana at this year’s Olympics in neighbouring Brazil. The Guyana Olympic Association confirmed that Aliyah Abrahams, an American from Brooklyn New York and first year student at South Carolina University is eligible to participate at the Rio games under the Golden Arrowhead through her Guyanese parentage.Competing at the SEC outdoor Championships held on May 12 – 14, the South Carolina Freshman hit an impressive personal best to take fourth in the 400m. Abrahams ran 52.04, almost eight-tenths of a second better than her personal best. In the process her time of 52.04 was good enough to be within the Olympic qualification time of 52.20 for the women 400 meters. The time also shot her all the way up to ninth in the school’s history for the outdoor quarter mile. Overall, her time is the best for the school since 2008.
Abrahams joins fellow American bred athletes Troy Doris (Triple Jump) and Brenessa Thompson (100m & 200m) alongside Winston George (400m) who’s also based in the USA to qualify to represent Guyana at the Rio Games.
