Accused bandit slapped with 4 robbery- under-arms charges

Shamar Charles on Friday appeared before two separate Georgetown magistrates in two different courtrooms to answer to four robbery-under-arms charges.
The first charge alleged that on July 27, 2018, while in the vicinity of Houston, East Bank Demerara (EBD), while being in the company of others, and while being armed with a gun, he robbed Devindra Persaud of one Samsung cellphone valued at $120,000, and of $50,000 in cash.
Charles denied the allegation when it was read to him by Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore, but was remanded to prison.
He also appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan on three robbery-under-arms charges, all of which he denied.
One of those charges read that on July 25, 2018, while in the vicinity of Bagotstown, EBD, and while being armed with a gun, he robbed Debby Atwell of a quantity of jewellery valued at $230,000.
Another charge alleged that on July 24, 2018, at Eccles, EBD, while being in the company of others, and while being armed with a gun, he robbed Ellis Valenzuela of a cellphone valued at $14,000.
The last charge alleged that on that same day and in the vicinity of Eccles, while being in the company of others and while being armed with a gun, Charles robbed Weifins Wong of a quantity of jewellery, cash and a cellphone, all valued at $2.6 million.
The Police prosecutor objected to Charles being placed on bail due to the seriousness of the offences and the fact that a gun was used.
Charles was refused bail, and was remanded to prison. The matters were adjourned to August 13 and 17, when the cases will continue at the Providence and Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts respectively.
