Accused gets 3 years for causing death charge

Greg Stewart, a 41-year-old truck driver who was charged with driving dangerously and causing the death of rugby player Justin Crawford, was on Tuesday sentenced to three years in prison by Magistrate Renita Singh.

The charge stated that in July of 2015, at Mill Public Road on the East Bank of Demerara (EBD), Stewart drove motor lorry GJJ 7168, causing the death of

Crawford.

The defendant was also fined $30,000 and would serve an additional two weeks in prison after he was found guilty of failing to stop at the time of the accident, and failing to render assistance to the teenager.

On the day of the incident, the accused was driving the lorry with a trailer attached, which struck Crawford. Reports are that the teenager was tossed into the air, before falling to the ground.

The accused, who was unaware of what had occurred, proceeded on his way, and was later identified by eyewitnesses, apprehended and charged for the offence.
