Adopt, don’t shop, this holiday season

By L Ramnarace of ARAPS – Tails of Hope

As a little child, I always loved animals, they brought a sense of peace and warmth throughout my troubling childhood. I grew up always knowing that someday I wanted to be surrounded by lots of animals.
Before I joined Animal Rescue Adoption and Protection Society (ARAPS), I would go around feeding animals in my community and trying to do the best I could. When I joined ARAPS, my life completely changed.
Suddenly, I was part of a group of phenomenal people and was able to do so much more for the animals. I cannot describe the passion and commitment that our members have, each of them goes above and beyond and it is truly inspiring.
I have 11 pets currently, all of whom are rescues. The love that these animals have to give has made my life so much better, and for those of you willing to commit to a pet and find it in your hearts to adopt, I can tell you that your life will be changed forever.

When I think back about some of the pets that I have, I am extremely happy that I made the decision to adopt a rescue animal: I am privileged to have so much love from them. Whenever I have a difficult day, the one thing I can always expect as a constant joy is the way my dogs jump or get excited whenever I come home, or the way my cats greet me at the door, or even the quiet time that my turtle and I spend watching TV together.
There is so much that animals have to offer, and you can give back by simply adopting or volunteering your time.
With the holiday season upon us, I would like to make a special appeal on behalf of ARAPS that you open your homes and your hearts towards adopting a pet. However, it is important to remember adopting an animal is a lifelong commitment for the lifespan of that animal.
Adopting an animal is priceless: knowing that you literally changed the life of that animal is priceless; the love that is reciprocated by that animal is one beyond measure. Adoption changes us, makes us better, helps us to learn to appreciate the little things in life.
You would have earned yourself a loving forever friend – our shelter animals have so much love to offer and are just looking for a forever home. Most shelter animals are also potty trained.
We try our best to ask persons to take a stance against animal cruelty – when you buy a cat or a dog, you are enabling the actions of breeders in Guyana to continue breeding animals. Breeding is usually done in poor conditions and involves forcing males to mate with the females.
Continuous breeding often leads to health problems such as joint or muscle pains, respiratory issues, eye problems and hearing loss, swelling of the mammary glands, etc. By adopting a cat or a dog, you are ensuring that the cycle of breeding is reduced.
Adopting, on the other hand, helps more than just one animal ARAPS – Tails of Hope receives numerous calls on a daily basis about animals that need help. By adopting an animal, you are helping us to make room for those other animals in need. You are not only allowing another animal to have a chance at a better life, but your adoption fee goes directly towards helping those animals.
