AG, UNDP talk up opportunities to support criminal justice system

Attorney General Anil Nandlall on Tuesday met with a delegation from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Guyana at his office in Georgetown.
The main objective of the meeting was to discuss potential programming opportunities aimed at extending support to the criminal justice system, specifically strengthening institutional capacity to effectively reduce the backlog of criminal cases.
Nandlall, during the meeting, pledged his commitment to collaborate with the UNDP in addressing critical challenges within the justice system and promoting regional collaboration.
He proposed a number of initiatives to be pursued that would significantly address different challenges and that would result in a more efficient functioning of the criminal justice machinery.
The AG also briefed the team on a number of programmes currently being executed by his chambers and by extent the Legal Affairs Ministry aimed at revamping the country’s legal system, including the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB)-funded Support for the Criminal Justice System (SCJS) Programme, focused primarily on reducing the prison population.
He also promised to establish a committee which will continue to liaise with the UNDP in the planning and execution of a programme aimed at reducing the backlog in the criminal justice system.
The visiting delegation thanked the Attorney General for the opportunity to delve into shared areas of interest.
The UNDP delegation was headed by Deputy Resident Representative Stephanie Ziebell and included Acting Head of Governance and Poverty Reduction, Christalle Gemon; Programme Associate, Sarita Marshall; and, Operations Coordinator, Rene Chan.
Nandlall was accompanied by Public Trustee/Official Receiver, Prithima Kissoon.
