After a five-year absence from Test cricket, Guyana’s left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul made a return to the Test squad that will depart on January 8 to tour Bangladesh.
His home cricket club, Albion Community Centre Cricket Club (ACCCC) and the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) have extended congratulations to him.
ACCCC Secretary Omarnauth Outar stated that saying the club was happy to see Permaul return to Test cricket was an understatement. “For a number of years, Permaul has been topping the bowling charts and he deserves this. I don’t think there is anyone who can doubt this selection. Veerasammy himself is a strong man. We know he is a committed cricketer and he never gives up, that speaks volumes,” Outar said.
The ACCCC Secretary says that when Permaul takes the field, he will not be alone as the entire Albion will be walking with him in spirit.
Meanwhile, the BCB President and members extended heartfelt congratulations to Permaul and Romario Shepherd on their selections to tour Bangladesh with the senior West Indies team in the Test and One-Day International (ODI) teams respectively.
President Hilbert had congratulated both players during the recent Brian Ramphal Awards programme, and told them that the entire Ancient county was rooting and praying for them. “We would like to urge the two heroes to remain focused and to be outstanding ambassadors of the Berbice brand. Please remember at all times that you are the current representatives of the legacy of [Rohan] Kanhai; [Basil] Butcher; [Joe] Solomon; [John] Trim; [Alvin] Kallicharran and [Roy] Fredericks.”
“We are delighted for Permaul as he is finally being rewarded for his outstanding performances over the last few years. We at the BCB are confident that he would make us proud with some great bowling spells while Shepherd would continue his development as one of the Region’s leading all-rounders. May God bless both of you, may he protect you on the trip and offer you both peace of mind.”
The BCB would also like to congratulate the Albion and Tucber Park Cricket Clubs on the outstanding job they are doing and wish them even more success in the future. (Brandon Corlette)
