Albouystown man nabbed with illegal firearm

An Albouystown, Georgetown man was on Tuesday evening arrested along Mandela Avenue by ranks of a mobile patrol unit with an unlicensed firearm.
Police’s investigation revealed that the 27-year-old suspect was riding his motorcycle in the vicinity of the “well” close to Roxanne Burnham Gardens and upon seeing the Police, dropped an object and attempted to escape.

Upon observing the man’s behaviour, the ranks promptly arrested him, but not before collecting the .32 pistol with three live rounds of ammunition, which he attempted to dispose of. He is expected to be charged before the end of the week.
In 2016, the Police seized a total of 109 illegal firearms, compared to 115 in 2015. These included 49 pistols, 32 revolvers, 26 shotguns, two rifles and one sub-machine gun. Most of the weapons were seized in A Division (Georgetown-East Bank Demerara) – 46 and F Division (Interior Locations) – 34.
For the year, thus far, several illegal weapons have already been seized, including a high-powered rifle at a house in Tucville as recent as last week. In addition, several live rounds of ammunition for two different weapons were unearthed during a Police operation at Rasville, Georgetown.
