Residents of Alexander Village, Georgetown on Saturday had to again endure floodwaters after heavy downpours.
During the day, there was about eight inches of water covering the road and premises of many residents. This resulted in the roads being almost inaccessible for vehicles, as drivers were forced to proceed through the water. As such, many pedestrians were left with no choice but to wade through the filthy water. Further, some of the lower flats of buildings, particularly those in First Street, Alexander Village, were flooded.
When Guyana Times visited the area on Saturday, residents were up in arms about the situation. According to one resident, the flooding situation, particularly in First Street, has been a chronic situation for many years. The resident is seeking the intervention of Government to assist in fixing the drainage problem in the area.
Residents said they have been enduring flooding for over 20 years, even with a small amount of rainfall.
According to residents they have been seeking interventions from both City Hall and Government but to no avail.
Another resident told this publication that the situation is as a result of improper drainage in the area and the need for the trenches to be dug and desilted. He believes that until there is a way for the water to escape, there will be many more of these adverse scenarios to come in the future.
“People does get damages. People does be uncomfortable. It ain’t permissible because of the septic tank water and them things,” the elderly man related.
Just a few months ago, residents of the area experienced flooding. This was due to a sluice (koker) that was left open by the sluice attendant, who they believed fell asleep. Persons of the community are calling on the authorities to make the necessary arrangements to fix the drainage problem, and relieve them of the travails they experience due to the reoccurring flooding.
