− Ramdhani creates history
Priyanna Ramdhani will be remembered as the first local badminton player to play in all the open doubles final of a single competition as she recently completed a successful run in all three categories of the GUMDAC Annual Open Doubles Tournament.
She partnered with Greer Jackson to win the ladies open doubles, with Jonathan Mangra she won the mixed doubles title and with Avinash Odit, Priyanna played
the men’s open final for the first time finishing as runners up.
The Guyana Badminton Association started off the year with the GUMDAC Annual Open Doubles Tournament which started on Wednesday February 1 and ended on Friday February 3 at the National Gymnasium.
This tournament which is playing for the fifth year is made possible through Darrell Carpenay, Managing Director of GUMDAC and also an executive on the GBA.
The highlight of the evening was in the Men Doubles where National and Caribbean Champion Ramdhani competed in the Men Doubles partnered with Odit and took the top men pair of Nicholas Ali and Jonathan Mangra to a three Setter, losing in the first set 21-14, coming back in the second game to win 21-19 and finally lost in the third game set 21-13. It was a great effort this young player put in and proved that she can be on top with the male players.
The Matches Played were: Open men doubles third place: Marlon Chung and Ronald Chang Yuen defeated Gokarn Ramdhani and Javid Rahaman: 21-16, 21-19. Open men doubles finals: Nicholas Ali and Jonathan Manga defeated Priyanna Ramdhani and Avinash Odit: 21-14, 19-21, 21-13. Open ladies doubles round robin: Priyanna Ramdhani and Greer Jackson defeated Angelica Holder and Pricilla Moore: 21-9, 21-10, Angelica Holder and Pricilla Moore defeated Ayanna Wickham-Watson and Emelia Ramdhani: 21-17, 21-12. Open mix doubles third place: Ronald Chang Yuen and Pricilla Moore defeated Avinash Odit and Angelica Holder: 21-13, 17-21, 17-21. Open ladies doubles finals: Priyanna Ramdhani and Jonathan Mangra defeated Nicholas Ali & Greer Jackson: 21-17, 21-15. The over-all winners are: MEN DOUBLES: First – Nicholas Ali and Jonathan Mangra, Second- Priyanna Ramdhani and Avinash Oit, Third- Marlon Chung and Ronald Chang Yuen. Ladies doubles: First-Priyanna Ramdhani and Greer Jackson, second-Pricilla Moore and Angelica Holder, third- Ayana Wickhan-Watson and Emelia Ramdhani. Mix doubles: First – Priyanna Ramdhani and Johnathan Mangra, second- Nicholas Ali and Greer Jackson, third Ronald Chang Yuen and Pricilla Moore.
The GBA is pleased with the turnout of the players especially at the starting of the New Year 2017 and will be getting plans in order for the Mash Tournament planned for later in this month.
