Race day is here, as Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC) hosts their first event for 2018, the highly anticipated ‘King of Strip’ Drag race meet at the South Dakota Circuit, Timehri.
In the build up to today, there was much talk as to who will dominate the quarter-mile straight and numerous battle lines were drawn but it’s now time for action and who will stand up to the test.
The first will be, can anyone stop the powerful Team Mohammed’s Enterprise and their Nissan GT-Rs? One of the GT-Rs which will be sporting its new all- black look currently holds record time of 7.569s while the Nismo version has a best time of 8.906s.
The team which has been at the track fine-tuning over the last two days was cautious to pronounce that they can have another record breaking run but still don’t see their reign being broken.
The man who is expected to pose any possible threat is Shawn Persaud with his lightning fast Toyota Caldenia since it has a time of 8.311 seconds which was clocked at the last meet in October. Peter Daby and his new look RX-7 can also be thrown in the mix.
In the lower categories, Kevin Deodass has plans of making Rameez Mohamed swallow his own words that he has the fastest starlet when they battle wheel to wheel in the ‘Fastest Starlet’ category. Anand Ramchand is also set to compete in the winner-takes-all Starlet category.
In the 11-second class, Raymond Seebarran, at the helm of a Nissan Pulsar is hoping planning on topping he large surplus of competition expected in that category while former 13-second champion Imran Khan plans on regaining the title with his Toyota AT 150.
With addition of at least four Surinamese competitors along with the East Coast Demerara versus West Side grudge duels it is expected to be a spectacle. The East side will have several garages and mechanic shops on the East Coast while the West Side battle will feature cars built primarily from there.
In addition, the matchup will result in points being awarded to either side every time any of their representatives score points by winning one of the nine classes.
The event is being organised by the GMR&SC in partnership with Tropical Shipping along with support from Stag, Mohamed’s Enterprise, E-Networks, BM Soat, Prem’s Electrical, Rent A Tent, White Boy Auto Spares, Windjammer, Samaroo’s Investments, Trans Pacific, Special Auto, Ramchand’s Auto Body, Nexus, Palm Court and JR Burgers.
