Allegedly drunken driver gets $275,000 bail for Mahaica fatal accident

Twenty-one-year-old Saif Arjune was on Thursday granted $275,000 bail on charges of causing death by dangerous driving and driving under the influence.
Arjune, of Green Field, East Coast Demerara (ECD), appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court, where he pleaded not guilty to the first charge which stated that on May 9 at Hand-en-Veldt Public Road, Mahaica, ECD, he drove motor car PJJ 458 in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of 44-year-old Shazie Hoosain of Green Field.
The matters were adjourned until June 30.
It was reported that Hoosain was killed and two others were injured when the car in which they were travelling crashed into a utility pole at the Hand-en-Veldt Public Road, in the wee hours of Monday, May 9.
Based on reports, motor car PJJ 485, driven by Arjune, was proceeding along the Hand-en-Veldt Public Road at a fast pace when he lost control and crashed into the utility pole after which the car slammed into a concrete culvert.
As a result of the impact, the driver and other occupants sustained injuries to their bodies. Police ranks who responded reportedly pulled the injured persons from the wreckage and took them to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital, where Hoosain was pronounced dead on arrival.
Arjune and a teenager suffered broken right legs and were subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where they were admitted. Following the accident, a breathalyser test had been administered to Arjune. He was found to be over the legal alcohol limit.
