Amsterdam wins, Allicock misses out at World Boxing C/ships
Friday was a day of mixed fortunes for Guyanese boxers in Uzbekistan, as Desmond Amsterdam and Keevin Allicock both competed in the Round of 32 of their respective weight classes at the International Boxing Association (IBA) Elite Men’s World Boxing Championships.
Desmond Amsterdam was impressive during his first outing in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on Friday morning.
Fighting out of the red corner in his Round of 32 bout against Kristiyan Nikolov of Bulgaria, Amsterdam won the fight on points, convincing three of the five judges after three electrifying rounds.
Amsterdam’s winning scores read 29-28, 29-28, 30-27, while Nikolov convinced 2 judges 29-28, 29-28.
Guyana’s current Sportsman of the Year will go on to the Round of 16 in the Light Heavyweight (Elite 75-80KG) class, where he is billed to battle Spain’s Gazimagomed Gafurova on Tuesday, May 9.
Guyana’s other competitor at the Games, Keevin Allicock, fought valiantly on Friday, but lost to Abdumalik Khalokov of Uzbekistan in their Featherweight (Elite 54-57KG), Round of 32 clash. Also fighting out of the red corner, Allicock lost the bout on points on all five judges’ scorecards.
This year’s World Championships see big cash incentives being offered to medalists, with the gold medalist in every weight class set to receive US$200,000, silver medalist US$100,000, and bronze medalist US$50,000.
