From Courtland, Lower Corentyne to No 59 Village, Upper Corentyne, it was all excitement in Region Six when the bikers transformed the roadways into their playfield while the Benjamin Sports Mash Day cycling event took place on February 23. Andre Green, who goes by the name Padlock, rode with confidence and won the Absolute category.
Hailing from Ulverston Village Corentyne Berbice, Padlock completed the race that rolled off at Lot 220 Courtland Village in front of Benjamin Sports, in 1 hour 59 minutes and 53 seconds. He rode at an average speed of 23.6 mph but sprinted at a speed of 37.0 mph.
In second position was Christopher Griffith, tailing Padlock along the roadways but being undone by Padlock’s sprinting ability. Griffith hung on to the end, but Padlock was in the lead from Alness Village to Courtland.
Romello Crawford finished in third position, while Paul De Nobrega ended in fourth position. Michael Anthony was fifth and Briton John sixth, among the top riders in the main event. The Junior category saw Ajay Gopilall finishing first, while Ralph Seenarine finished second. Veteran Junior Niles showed his experience, winning the veteran U-45. Paul Choo-Wee-Nam finished second, while Jaikaran Sookhai ended in third position.
In the veteran O-45 category, Nigel London emerged top rider, while Shemika Teixeira and Whitney Price finished as the top lady bikers. David Hicks won the Juvenile category while Steve Bhimsen and Mario Washington finished in the top three.
This cycling event was sponsored by former national cycling champion Wilbert Benjamin, who is now a businessman. The event was held to observe Wilbert’s father’s 85th birth anniversary. Trophies and cash prizes were presented to the riders who performed exceptionally in their respective categories.
Beverage giants Banks DIH Limited were among the donors who assisted in providing trophies for the racing event.
At the conclusion of the event, Andre Green spoke exclusively to this publication. “I was confident heading into this race”, Green disclosed. “I must thank my family, friends and my Coach Arnold Hintzen for the support they give me when I’m done,” the champion rider related.
Green will be participating in the Hasan Mohammed-organised race from Linden to Homestretch Avenue on Sunday, February 24.
