Scores of residents, as well as teachers from various schools across Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), are complaining about the deplorable conditions at the Anna Regina Community Centre Ground, as they voiced their views after the recently concluded children’s Mashramani activities, hosted by the Department of Education.
Alluding to the areas of concern, many pointed to the swampy conditions of the
ground surrounding the dilapidated pavilion. Scores of children and teachers who converged at the facility for the Mashramani activities were inconvenienced due to the faulty pavilion and continuous rainfall.
Parents have also expressed concern over the pile-up of garbage which has accumulated at the entrance, which they said is unhygienic for children and spectators who gather there.
Concerns were also raised about the condition of the stage on which the children
performed. The structure was reportedly built by officers from the Regional Administration Works Committee; however, a student from Aurora Secondary School was injured during her performance and had to seek medical attention. The condition of the washroom at the site is also an area of concern.
The Dramatic Poetry and Calypso Competitions, which were slated to be held at the ground, were postponed due to flooding. Parents as well as teachers are calling on the Anna Regina Town Council to invest in the community ground, which is the largest playground in Region Two. The facility is used to host international shows, as well as cricket matches, and the concerned residents are questioning why the Council is not utilising funds from these events to upgrade the facility.
This publication was reliably informed that the Council has plans to upgrade the ground, however, due to insufficient funds, works cannot commence.
