Anna Regina Fire Station commences Fire Prevention Week observances
– several talks, school visits planned
The Anna Regina Fire Station in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) on Sunday commenced Fire Prevention Week with an interfaith service at the Living Water Full Gospel Church in Henrietta, Essequibo.
Fire officers attached to the Station, in full uniform, sang praises as the Week commenced under the theme, “Fire safety a collective responsibility for the preservation of life and property”.
Head of the Anna Regina Fire Station, Clive Mc Donald outlined that the church service kicked off the week-long activities. During his address to the congregation, he called on persons to continue to live in unity, reminded that preventing fires was everyone’s business and encouraged those present to act in a more responsible way.

Mc Donald explained that the Week was observed as a result of the world’s worst conflagration – which occurred in the United States of America on October 9, 1871.
During that inferno, 250 persons died, 17,430 buildings were destroyed and 100,000 persons were rendered homeless. He revealed that the observance was Fire Prevention Day until 1922 when it was changed to a week by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
Other activities planned include visits to secondary schools on the Essequibo Coast and a community interaction with residents at the Anna Regina Market.
The Station will be opened to visits from schools and the general public during the Week. The observances will conclude on Saturday.
