Anna Regina labourer remanded

A 39-year-old labourer from Anna Regina, Essequibo Coast, was on Thursday remanded to prison after he was charged for unlawful wounding.

He made his appearance before Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Suddie Magistrate’s Court. It is alleged that on July 10, he unlawfully wounded Govinda Persaud, a carpenter from Richmond Village, Essequibo Coast. The prosecution is contending that on the day in questioned at about 22:00h, the Virtual Complainant and defendant were on a drinking spree when an argument ensued and the suspect dealt several lashes about the victim’s body with a cutlass. The carpenter received injuries and was taken to the Suddie Public Hospital.

Bail was objected to by Prosecutor Haimraj Ramsewack on the grounds of the prevalence and seriousness of the offence. As such, the prosecution’s submissions were upheld and the labourer was remanded to prison. The case will continue on August 10.
