Annual Mayor’s Cup tourney postponed

With the COVID-19 pandemic forcing cancellation of sporting events around the world, organisers have decided to postpone staging of a special football extravaganza: the annual Mayor’s Cup/Inter-Ward/Village Football Tournament.

Former National Football Coach Lennox Arthur, who coordinates the staging of this prestigious and lucrative tournament, has tentatively rescheduled the kick-off date to the end of August 2020, in order that the grand final may be held on October 12, to coincide with the 29th birth anniversary of His Worship, the Mayor of Georgetown, Ubraj Narine.

This tournament will, for the first time, have participation of 32 teams drawn from five Regional Member

Flashback to September 12, 2016, when Police Football Club defeated Western Tigers in the final of the most recent Mayor’s Cup tournament

Associations (RMAs), who will participate in the 11-a-side format.
Six of these teams will come from Georgetown: Bourda Blues, Charlestown, Tucville, Road Warriors, North Sophia and South Sophia. Berbice will be represented by: Mahaicony, Airy Hall, Calcutta, Paradise Invaders and New Amsterdam; while East Demerara’s representatives are: Ann’s Grove, Golden Grove, Victoria, Victoria Scorpions, Buxton Stars, Beterverwagting, Melanie, Mahaica, Plaisance and Lima Dam.
The East Bank Demerara teams are Timehri and Kuru Kururu; the West Demerara teams are: Uitvlugt, Pouderoyen, Stewartville, Den Amstel, Den Amstel Kings, West Side Spartans, Crane, Wales and Hurry Ate.
The proposed venues are the Georgetown Football Club Ground, Bourda, Mahaicony Community Centre, Victoria Community Centre, and Den Amstel Community Centre grounds.
The tournament format would allow for minimal mistakes, since it is knockout-patterned.
