As a result, the grand Phagwah Mela celebration at the National Stadium, Providence, on the East Bank of Demerara – a yearly fete which has attracted hundreds of people from all walks of life – has been cancelled.
Organiser, Yog Mahadeo – Director of Inspire Inc, announced in a press statement on Friday that the decision to cancel the event was made with deep regret.
“It is with deep regret and tears in my eyes that I announce, on behalf of the team, the cancellation of this year’s Phagwah festival,” Mahadeo stated.
Phagwah is expected to be celebrated on Monday, March 9, 2020.
Phagwah/Holi is a Hindu celebration that symbolises the triumph of good over evil.
In Guyana, it is a festival that celebrates unity; a festival where people from across the political, religious and ethnic divide, come together and celebrate as one.
