The National Women’s Basketball Team will return home with their hearts heavy and heads hung after not being able to register a win at the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) this year.
Coming off of two losses to both Suriname and Barbados, the local girls were hungry for a win, but instead produced what could be considered their worst performance in the tournament.
Playing at the Anthony Nesty Sportshal in Paramaribo, Guyana found themselves in hot water at a very early stage of the game. Tournaments favourites Dominican Republic got better with time, and carried out such an onslaught that Guyana was left at an 88-point deficit.
Once again, Miriam McKenzie top scored for Guyana with 13 points, but it was no match for the 5 Dominican players who registered double figures. Andreina Paniagua registered the highest individual score for her team with 28 points, whilst Esmery Martinez followed with 18 points.
Owing to the massive 112-24 loss, Guyana has not advanced past the group stage. The Women’s team was in Group B with Barbados, Dominican Republic and Suriname.
Their male counterparts will depart for Suriname on Friday to participate in the men’s version of the competition. Led by 18-year-old Stanton Rose, the male team is said to have a great chance at doing well in the competition, after defeating the Barbados team 2-1 in a friendly series. Guyana’s first match will be on Sunday, June 24, against Grenada.
