A Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) motorcyclist died on Tuesday after he was struck by a car at Mackenzie, Linden. Three persons, including an 11-month-old child, were injured in the accident.
Dead is Florenda Benjamin of Block 22, Wismar, Linden. Injured are Leinani Ally, 31, of Lot 26 Cinderella City, Amelia’s Ward; Emily Ally, 11 months of the same address, and Mary Fraser, 16, of 24 Cinderella City, Amelia’s Ward. The three injured persons were all occupants of the car.
Reports are the accident occurred about 16:30h on Sir David Rose Avenue, Mackenzie. Guyana Times understands that 37-year-old Benjamin, who was riding motorcycle CJ 1644, was struck down by motor car HC 6299, which was driven by 31-year-old Michael Stewart of Amelia’s Ward, Mackenzie.
According to the Police report, the driver of the car, which was proceeding north, reportedly overtook another car and in the process he struck Benjamin, who was proceeding south along the eastern side of the road.
Benjamin and other injured persons were rushed to the Linden Hospital Complex (LHC), where Benjamin was pronounced dead on arrival, while those injured were treated.
This publication understands that this is the second accident to have occurred at the location this week; however, the first accident had no casualties. In the accident which occurred on Monday evening, a motorcyclist narrowly escaped with minor injuries after his motorcycle collided with a car at Wismar Housing Scheme, Linden. The accident occurred about 17:00h as the motorcycle CH 8217, which was ridden by Kellon Nicholas, proceeded east along the northern side of Allan Lewis Drive and collided with motor car PTT 8052, which was driven by Tonisha Bridglall.
At the time of the accident, Bridglall was reportedly proceeding from the Wismar Hill access road without stopping onto Allan Lewis Drive which resulted in the collision. The motorcyclist who reportedly jumped off his motorcycle fell to the ground and his motorcycle broke in two. The rear right-side door and fender of the car were slightly damaged.
Residents have since called for speed bumps to be placed in the area, which is noted for such accidents. There is also a blind turn at the intersection, which residents are calling on the authorities to look into, more so since it is in the vicinity of the Wismar Hill Primary School. Meanwhile, E Division (Linden-Kwakwani) Commander Anthony Vanderhyden has issued a warning, urging road users to be cautious on the roadways, especially when it is raining. (Utamu Bell)
