Three men, armed with two guns and a cutlass, robbed the Long Sheng Chinese Supermarket at Ankerville, Port Mourant, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), on Friday. During the ordeal, the owners were beaten before the men escaped with just over $1 million in cash, a quantity of phone cards and two cell phones. Reports are the robbery occurred at about 20:00h. In the CCTV footage that was sent to this publication, two of the men barged into the supermarket fully armed, while the third person kept guard. The suspects later mugged the Chinese nationals, and held one of their female staff at gunpoint.
The woman was led to the cashier booth, along with the owner, by one of the bandits, and forced to put cash in a bag. The footage also showed the bandits gun-butting and kicking the Chinese nationals.
Customers, who were in the supermarket at the time, were instructed to lie on the floor as the men made their demands. After handing over the cash from the register, the owner of the business was taken to a room in the supermarket, where he was forced to hand over a larger amount of cash.
After collecting the money, the three men made their escape in an awaiting motor car. The proprietor received injuries to his head and about his body.
Guyana Times was told that one person is in Police custody as investigations continue. (G9)
