Two armed bandits committed a daring daylight robbery on a Chinese supermarket at Central Amelia’s Ward, Linden on Thursday and escaped with almost $1 million in cash.
Based on reports received, the suspects who are yet to be apprehended invaded the Xing Wang Supermarket, which is owned by 35-year-old Chinese national Gua Xiang at approximately 09:00h on the day in question.
They reportedly held the owner at gunpoint and demanded cash and other valuables. The two men ended up behind the counter and collected two bags containing $950,000 in cash. The cash was intended to stock up the supermarket with goods. The men also escaped with an iPhone 6S belonging to the Chinese national.
According to the victim, he was at the counter in his supermarket when he observed a male with a hoodie rushing inside. Upon entering the supermarket, the suspect then pointed a silver firearm at him, while an accomplice went around the counter and grabbed the money which was in two black plastic bags.
The suspects then ran out of the supermarket and made good their escape on foot. One of the suspects was reportedly clad in a pair of black pants and a mauve long-sleeve jersey with yellow stripes and yellow Nike logo with while the other was reportedly clad in a blue hoodie and black pants.
Police were summoned to the scene and managed to obtain Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) footage. An investigation has been launched into the incident.
