Armed bandits rob East Canje supermarket

Two men armed with handguns carried out a robbery at Good Life Supermarket in East Canje, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) on Wednesday evening.
The supermarket is operated by Chinese nationals. Reports are the robbery occurred around 17:30h as the supermarket closed.
At the time, several customers were inside the supermarket, with two at the cashier when the two armed men walked in and one of them immediately pointed a gun at the cashier.
The gunman then demanded that the cashier move as he grabbed $100,000 while the other wrestled with a female customer and eventually took away her bag.
The bag contained $21,000 along with documents.
The men then quickly walked out of the building and disappeared on foot.
Guyana Times understands that some customers who were in the building were unaware that a robbery was in progress at the time.
Police have since arrested one person after viewing Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) footage.
Regional Commander Boodnarine Persaud said the Police were not treating the person in custody as a suspect currently.
However, he expressed concern that the supermarket had no security. He noted that there were several private security firms in the New Amsterdam-East Canje area.
The supermarket is owned by 32-year-old Wang Wei Xiong,
Back in July 2020, the supermarket was broken into and the perpetrators escaped with cash and a CCTV monitor.
A wireless camera was also taken along with more than $100,000 worth of phone cards and a quantity of cigarettes.
Additionally, $400,000 and small hand tools were stolen. (G4)
